Kicking Off the Contemporary Australian Book & Films
¢º5 day-run from September 5: Titled "Screen Literature: Writings on the Wall" on the theme of the literary properties of film scripts ¢º- Featuring 13 Australian Movies: Artsonje Center, at the book fair of the Kyobo Bookstore ¢º- Actress Gillian Jones and writer Rodney Hall visit Korea and hold an autographing session.
With the Australian Embassy and the Australia-Korea Foundation as co-hosts, the Artsonje Center, the newest integrated complex for cultural and arts activities situated in Sogyok-dong, Seoul, held the "Contemporary Australian Books and Films" from September 5 to 10 (closed on Monday). This was an occasion for the appreciation of literary works, a book fair, and a film show, as well as a dialogue between invited Australian movie stars and writers and Korean writers and viewers.
The special focus of the festival is on the relationship between literature and movies. The key subjects of the film festival are; 1. Literature Adopted to Screen, 2. Screen Movie as Part of Culture, 3. Screen vs Literature.
The title "Screen Literature" expresses the inseparable character of literature and film as seen in recent trends in Australian literary works and movies.
Gillian Jones, the Australian actress who played the heroine in Oscar & Lucinda and What I Have Written, visited Korea and described vividly the making of these movies.
Rodney Hall, the movie critic and winner of the Miles Franklin Award, the former director of the Australian Culture Centre, Don'o Kim, a Korean writer living in Australia, and John Scott, the author of What I Have Written, came to Korea to help celebrate the festival. They held a autographing session for Korean fans and a seminar with Korean writers tracing the two countries' present literary and cultural trends.
The Artsonje Center hoped to enliven the cultural give-and-take between the two countries. The Artsonje Center also is also running the exhibition Unhomely from August 5 (Thur.) to September 27 (Sun.) on the subjects of families' lack of conversation and the growing number of family breakups due to disputes and financial problems. Therefore visiting the center at this time allows one to enjoy several Australian artistic genres at once.
