Lecture and Symposium
Trends and style changes of contemporary art continue to progress alongside various socio-cultural issues. In order for the art public to deeply involve itself and study such trends and changes in contemporary art, Artsonje offers a wide range of lectures, talks with artists, and international art symposiums at its Art Hall on the basement floor.

 

Contemporary Art, Cinema and Spectator's Culture

Ever since camera was invented, photography and cinema became an important part in the development of contemporary art. In recent times, the advancement of digital media allowed more effective use of such image media. Further, cinema, within the boundaries of visual art, started numerous discussions and found a place in the fields of contemporary art as a target of more serious examination. The series of symposiums examined movementsin contemporary art, and provided in-depth discussions on the relationship of cinema and contemporary art through aesthetic, critical, curatorial, and theoretical approaches by both French and Korean art experts.

Catherine Millet: From Global Art to Modest Art

The lecture given by Catherine Millet (editor of Art Press) looked into the current trend of contemporary French art, and examined two important art events held in France this year: Leon Biennale under the title of "Enjoyment of Exotic Sentiment" where many important artists participated, and the opening of Modest Art Museum in Sete with such exhibitions as Jeff Koons, Jim Shaw, and Kenji Yanobe. Through these two events, Catherine Millet discussed the basis of the internationalization of artworks and the impact of this phenomenon in contemporary art.

Artsonje organized the "Architect's Talk Contemporary Architecture and Spectators" program, which ran from September 2001 to November 2002. The program totaled 9 lectures of 7 Korean architects and 2 foreign architects wherein they discussed their works and issues concerning contemporary architecture. The participating Korean architects are all outstanding architects in the history of Korean contemporary architecture. In addition, two important Asian architects from China and Japan were invited to talk about their opinions on contemporary architecture, which provided an opportunity for the participants to reflect on similar problems that Korean contemporary architecture faces today.
The series of talks were organized to meet the public's interests in architecture, architects, and the architecture's proximity to contemporary art. The lecture series was planned to accommodate both the general public and professionals, recognize different trends in architecture and expand the base of such changes.

Contemporary Art Now in Japan

This symposium, which emphasized the importance of active cultural exchanges between Korea and Japan, was planned to thoroughly reexamine contemporary Japanese art based on past exhibitions at Artsonje. The symposium covered such wide areas as internationally working young Japanese artists, critiques, art systems and its relevant problems, among others. For the symposium, some influential art specialists, Midori Matsui (art critic), Yuki Kamiya (independent curator), and Kataoka Mami (Mori Museum curator), were invited for lively discussions.

New Media Art Symposium

This symposium focuses on the important issues relating to new media with the proliferation of photography, images, and digital media, and at the same time examines the aspect of contemporary art. Udo Kitelman (Director of Contemporary Museum, Frankfurt) Udo Meta Bauer (Chief Director of Kassel Documenta VI & Professor at Vienna Art School), Christian Jankobski (Artist) are invited to discuss the issues on theory and artworks, new media, and the future direction of contemporary art.

Nicolas Bourriaud : Lecture

Nicolas Bourriaud, director of Palais de Tokyo, Paris, gives a lecture on the contemporary art of the 90s. Based on the essays titled "Aesthetic of Relativity (1995)" and "Post Production (2001)," the lecture covers the theoretical background and critical points of views, which have been suggested to understand contemporary art in the 90s, and further examines his hands-on-experiences as a curator.
